Donna asks…

What is the best health care plan for student while attending medical school, like nursing?

I’m a student nursing and ASAP need some health insurance, including Emergency Room coverage.
Does anyone know any type of Health Insurance for medical student like that, affordable and reliable?
Greatly appreciate and thanks to all,

Sarah Fields answers:

Best is coverage under your parents’ health insurance. Most goes to age 23 as long as you are a full-time student.

Otherwise contact the school and see what is offered to students in general – many provide access to this coverage.

Avoid emergency rooms. A visit can be as much as $1,000 for routine (unneeded) care.

Mandy asks…

what are some affordable health insurance for california citizens?

I’m 22 years old. I have not had health insurance since i was 19. im a babysitter and i only get paid about $800 a month, im a full time student and that’s the only job i can obtain because of my school. My schedule changes every 9 weeks. keep in mind i also have school loans to pay and personal bills like cell phone and car / car insurance.

Sarah Fields answers:

When you say “affordable”, that’s a key word for “cheap”. Buying “affordable” health insurance is just like buying an “affordable” Corvette, brand spankin’ new. Cheap health insurance means high deductibles and little coverage.

And frankly, if you’re perfectly healthy and not overweight, the health insurance for a GOOD plan, with no deductible, is probably going to run you damn close to $300 a month. That’s just what it costs.

Honestly, your problem isn’t an insurance problem, it’s an income problem. You already have loans and revolving credit accounts (bills) and cell phone and car loans and car insurance. You can’t afford health insurance. You make $9600 a year. You’d qualify for welfare, except you probably live with parents or friends or someone, because in California, you certainly can’t afford rent, on $9600 a year.

Susan asks…

whats a really good health insurance for college students?

I was wondering what is a good health insurance company to get a plan with. Im a college student and im in nursing school so they want us to have health insurance in case we get hurt or exposed to anything at any of the hospitals we work at. Im not required to have it but i would like to look around and see if there is a good plan that I could afford. So in case something like that would happen i wont be paying for the required treatment completely out of my pocket. Thanks for the help.

Sarah Fields answers:

If you are in college, you may want to check out health insurance programs that are written through your school. United Healthcare has a plan available at many US schools. These student injury and illness plans provide wide ranging coverage and are designed to be affordable for college students. To check if your school is participating, go to www.UHCSR.com and enter your school name in the search box. You might also be interested in joining the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA), a national organization for nursing students. They have lots of member benefits, including student health insurance. Their membership fee is affordable.
