John asks…

What is the best affordable health insurance plans?

I am 20 years old and do not have health insurance and I need to get my wisdom teeth pulled! So i’m looking for an affordable health insurance.I’ve already applied for Medicaid and was denied.I need help please!

Sarah Fields answers:

Ultimately, you are the one who determines the affordability of your health insurance plan by deciding how much you will participate in sharing the cost of your health care with your insurance company. You decide what the right balance is between affordability and policy benefits.

If you choose a plan that covers everything i.e. Doctors office visits, prescription drugs, preventative health benefits, maternity coverage as well as low deductibles and low co-pays your monthly premiums will be significant. Adding optional dental benefits will increase the cost further.

On the other hand because you are young, presumably healthy and probably use the health care system sparingly you could consider a high deductible health plan that covers only the major health catastrophe. The cost will be much lower. Ask your agent if, in conjunction with a Health Savings Account, this approach might be right for you.

If you’d rather have more comprehensive approach consider a PPO or HMO plan. Consider higher co-pays for doctor’s office visits and perhaps not cover prescription drugs. Either of these approaches will result in a lower monthly premium. You then can use the monthly premium savings to pay for the occasional doctor visit or prescription and still come out ahead.

You need a trusted adviser to help you through the process of purchasing health insurance so that you understand what you are purchasing. That adviser can answer questions as to what is and is not covered by the policy, explain deductibles and co-pays and show you the hospitals and doctors that participate in the network. Check with the agent that writes your home or auto insurance he/she can provide you a health insurance proposal that takes into account your budget and health situation.

Some are going to suggest you go to their web site so that they earn a few pennies on a “click through”. Some may suggest going on line to get a quote but you probably already know that there is more to a good health insurance policy than price.

P.S. Health insurance does not cover dental procedures unless the cause of the damage is accidental

Mary asks…

Is there an affordable health insurance plan in California?

I am struggling to find an affordable health insurance plan for my family. I’ve asked this question before and got a great answer, then lost the link! Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Sarah Fields answers:

How do you define affordable? If you’re looking for a plan that covers everyone, with maternity, and no deductibles, for $300 a month, your pricing is NOT realistic.

But it appears that “do it yourself” health insurance isn’t going to work for you very well. You’re better off talking to a local agent, and you can call them as many times as you need to, with coverage questions.
