Jenny asks…

After a person gets SSDI how long does it take to get Medicare?

And what do they do for health insurance in the meantime in Maricopa County, AZ.
Does AHCCCS offer any coverage?

Sarah Fields answers:

Medicare will be available beginning the 24th month after SSDI starts.

What they do depends upon their situation. Some people apply for Medicaid. Some people have coverage through a spouse. Although unlikely and depending on the disability some insurance companies will offer certain major medical plans. There are defined benefit plans that are available in AZ that will give you some coverage. Other people just wait it out and hope for the best.

Helen asks…

Why do only 32 states out of 50 have a high-risk pool for individuals or small buinesses who cannot buy?

insurance due to the insurance companies claiming they have a “preexisting condition” (could be things like pink eye). If all states behaved and actually had health insurance options for the middle class, we would not have to have the feds step in. Why should we leave it up to the states? Is it fair when some states do not care about the middle class and cater to the elderly snowbirds, like AZ?

Sarah Fields answers:

Some states run things differently then others.
