Health Insurance San Diego Ca Question & Answers
If you are a personal trainer, how much do you get paid?
I’m thinking of switching fields and I’d like an honest look at my earnings potential. If you are a personal trainer, what I’d like to know is, what is your:
1. hourly rate (your take-home pay, not what gym charges customer)
2. number of hours worked each week
3. employer (if you work for a chain, I’d love to know the name of the gym)
4. what are your certifications?
Thank you so much.
Please only answer this question if you are a personal trainer or know someone who is. I’ve already done Internet research and am looking for some real-world numbers. Thanks!
Sarah Fields answers:
According to the US Dept of Labor:
Median annual earnings of personal trainers and group exercise instructors in May 2004 were $25,470. The middle 50 percent earned between $17,380 and $40,030. The bottom 10 percent earned less than $14,530 while the top 10 percent earned $55,560 or more. Earnings of successful self-employed personal trainers can be much higher. Median annual earnings in the industries employing the largest numbers of fitness workers in May 2004 were as follows:
Other amusement and recreation industries $28,670
Other schools and instruction 22,320
Civic and social organizations 20,530
Because many fitness workers work part time, they often do not receive benefits such as health insurance or retirement plans from their employers. They do get the unusual benefit of the use of fitness facilities at no cost.
*If it’s a lot of part-time work, what can you do about it?
Many group fitness and personal training jobs are part time, but many workers increase their hours by working at several different facilities or at clients’ homes.
*When you can be expected to work:
Night and weekend working hours are common.
The most important characteristic that an employer looks for in a new group fitness instructor is the ability to plan and lead a class that is motivating and safe.
Most certifying organizations require candidates to have a high school diploma, be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and pass an exam. All certification exams have a written component, and some also have a practical component. The exams measure knowledge of human physiology, proper exercise techniques, assessment of client fitness levels, and development of appropriate exercise programs. There is no particular training program required for certifications; candidates may prepare however they prefer. Certifying organizations do offer study materials, including books, CD-ROMs, other audio and visual materials, and exam preparation workshops and seminars, but exam candidates are not required to purchase materials to sit for the exams. Certification generally is good for 2 years, after which workers must become recertified by attending continuing education classes.
An increasing number of employers require fitness workers to have a bachelor’s degree in a field related to health or fitness, such as exercise science or physical education. Some employers allow workers to substitute a college degree for certification, but most employers who require a bachelor’s degree require both a degree and certification.

What is a good job/major for me?
I am about to graduate high school in San Diego CA, and I’m going to UCSD next year. I declared a major in political science, but I don’t really want to do that. I get very good grades and am going to school on a scholarship. I am good at things like writing, and I am interested in health and nutrition and the human body. What’s a good job and/or major for me? I’m kinda lost. Thanks
Sarah Fields answers:
I am afraid only you can tell what you want to do for a living. But I can tell you whatyou can major in that likely will not help.
Before the early 20th Century, a college degree was not meant to train a person for a job. A college education was for personal enrichment. To turn you into an educated person with skills in critical thinking to allow you to take up a career in public administration, the clergy or business where you would learn on the job.
There was no intention for a degree to train you for a specific career.
However since the 1940’s the expectation of the public about a college or university degree has changed and a college or university education is now expected to lead you to a career.
Unfortunately the college and university system has not changed with the times.
A degree in Anthropology, Archeology, Art, Art History Creative Writing, General Studies, History, Humanities, Liberal Arts, Literature, Political Science, most any language including English, Music History, Philosophy or Sociology is considered a “personal enrichment” degree. That is, these degrees are degrees that are meant to enrich you personally in the classical sense of a university education without leading to any specific job.
However, in today’s world where people go to university to enable themselves to get a job and hopefully a career a bachelor’s in these fields is essentially useless. With a degree in these fields and a GPA generally over 3.0 you can:
1. Get into law school. However law schools today graduate far more lawyers than there is business for lawyers.
2. Get into graduate school in a different field. Hopefully one without too many prerequisites you do not have. Consider getting a masters in Technology Management. You can make a similar salary to an engineer but you need essentially no sciences prerequisites.
3. Get into graduate school in the same field and eventually into a PhD so you can become a college professor in this field someday. However, there are far more PhD grads in some fields like Philosophy than there ever will be professorships or any kind of teaching programs.
4. Take a teaching qualification, which is usually 2 more years, so you can teach the subject at a public K-12 school.
5. Look for a job in a field where they want you to have a degree without any concern what it is. Where they only want the degree because they want educated people who have proven they can stick with something difficult and see it to completion. Like the insurance industry.
6. If you join the military you are more likely to enter as an officer instead of enlisted personnel.
Do note that if you do go for a more advanced degree, no one cares where you got your bachelor’s degree. Only the school where you got your most advanced degree counts. And that counts for a lot less than the name schools would have you believe.
If your GPA is over 3.0, don’t take a second undergrad degree if you already have one of these degrees. A graduate degree will be more valuable to you.
Do you agree with Dennis Miller’s assessment of of illegal immigration?
Protecting our borders is not a racist act, and anybody who tells you that it is, be they Mexico-American, American-Mexican, American-American or Mexican-Mexican, is quite simply full of it, full of it.
Sarah Fields answers:
I am a retired Police Officer from the Ca.Az. Mexico. We enforced immigration law everyday. Every Police Officer in this Nation takes an oath “To Protect and Defend the Constitution and to Enforce All Laws, State, Local and Federal”. To not do so is a crime in its self. It is called an Act of Omission and the Officer could be prosecuted. Police Officers across America enforce Federal law everyday. Federal drug laws, Federal Commerce laws, Federal interstate transportation laws, Federal interstate equipment laws, Federal D.O.T. Laws and airport Police enforce Federal Security laws. The Arizona laws forbids racial profiling in enforcing immigration law. The U.S. Code has no such prohibition. Those that protest the Arizona law should be careful of what they ask. If our Officers saw someone with a suitcase, a knapsack, clothes bundled or plastic bags with what appeared to be personal effects walking north towards the interstate we would do what is called a pedestrian check. If they spoke no English we would ask, “Donde su mecca” ” No, No mecca”. “Dispatch, would you inform B.P. I have a possible illegal detained at my location” In fact, there you are now trained to enforce Federal immigration law. It is legal. Ruled so by the Supreme Court. Any law enforcement Officer may ask anyone for I.D. States do not need a special law to enforce Federal immigration law or any Federal law. They are mandated to do so. No court is going to overturn enforcement of a Federal law. If they do they will have to prohibit the enforcement of all Federal laws by State and local agencies. Today in New York they have a S.U.V. With an explosive device in it. If the person that planted it like Al Queda claims, most likely entered the U.S. From the southern border. We detained and turned over to the Border Patrol illegal aliens from almost every country in the world. It was not uncommon to detain an illegal alien from Mexico early in a shift and turn them over to the Border Patrol. They would process them and return them to Mexico. Later in that same shift we would again detain that very same illegal alien and turn them over again. Law enforcement only apprehends one in five that enter our country illegally from the southern border. How does everyone think that we have an estimated 20 to 30 million here. Here are some F.B.I. Stats for you.
25 Americans will die today at the hands of an illegal alien. 12 with die from outright homicide. 13 will die from an illegal alien that has no drivers license or insurance driving drunk. 95 percent of the murder warrants held by law enforcement are for illegal aliens. They are over 200,000 illegal aliens that are wanted by law enforcement for child molestation or child rape.
Ca. Spends between 10 and 15 billion a year on welfare benefits just to illegal aliens, yet they just cut back their funding to public schools and increased the tuition to State universities
The Tohono O’Odham Nation and Arizona asked this Administration and this Congress for help with this criminal problem. Obama responded by reducing the number of Border Patrol agents on the southern border by 180. Napoltiano lies. They are doing nothing to secure our southern border. She stopped the building of the three tier fence. Where it is in place in San Diego county it works.
Someone please tell me why the American taxpayer owes the citizens of Mexico free health care, free food, free housing. Someone please tell me why we must give jobs to illegal aliens from Mexico at the cost of our own. When do we put the American people first and do what is fair to them.
I am on the border and have done the job for 30 years. I have been on Federal and State Drug interdiction Task Forces. We have pursued drug running across the desert going north and pursued the mules with money going south. We confiscated tons of drugs going north and confiscated millions of dollars going south.
When a politicians loved one is murdered or raped then the law will be enforced. Why don’t they hold their pro-amnesty rallies in the neighborhoods that the illegal alien gang members MS-13 control. Why don’t they go to the families of the victims of those that died at the hands of the illegal aliens that have no legal right to be here and tell them how much they love the illegals.
This is what they do to our desert habitat. Why don’t the left wing environmentalist come down here and clean this up. This is also what they do to our neighborhoods.
Last year I attended the funeral of a Border Patrol Agent run down by a illegal alien smuggler in Glamis Ca.
I just love these people that sit in their upper middle class or middle class homes, thousands of miles from here and think they know anything about the crime rates or what is going on down here.. Morons.
I am listening to Juan Williams saying that the borders are as secure as they have ever been and are more so now than they ever have been. Quoting Napolitano. Napolitano is pro amnesty and always has been. They lie, as always.. The border is not secure. If it was we would not be detaining illegals everyday.
