James asks…

I need to see a doctor soon, but I have medi-cal and I don’t know how to see a Dr. where I live! what do I do?

Okay I have Medi-Cal, more specifically Molina Healthcare. My “doctor” is in San Diego, where I used to live, but I go to college in Orange County now. My healthcare is supposed to cover almost everything apparently, and I’m having an emergency/infection right now and need to see a doctor soon. But I can’t go all the way to San Diego as it is 2 hours away and I have no vehicle, but I have no idea how to search for a doctor who will see me around here, nor do I know how billing the insurance works, or would I have to be assigned a new doctor around here, I just don’t know! All I know is, I have Medi-cal/Molina Healthcare and I need to see a doctor asap. What the hell am I supposed to do?? Why is healthcare so complicated, this shouldn’t be, I should just be able to see a doctor because I’m sick! :(

Sarah Fields answers:

Get out your insurance card. There should be a Customer Service number on it somewhere, most likely on the back. Call Customer Service and ask what doctors there are in your area.

Alternately, if you’re a college student, there might be a Student Health Center on your campus. You could check that out.

You might be able to go to Urgent Care or the ER, but those might be a bit more expensive.

Just a few options for you.

Mary asks…

California residents:All the plastic surgeries that celebrities get, affecting health care there?

I’m hoping to get answers mainly from Southern California residents, because that’s where many celebrities live, mainly in Los Angeles, the city and county, but,I’ll take answers from non-Southern California residents as well.

I work as a cashier at a supermarket in NY state, and,I see lots of “before” and “after” photos of celebrities on several different magazines and “supermarket rags” in front of all the registers in my store. Some of those celebrities look terrible in both their “before” and “after” photos.

In fact, they look even phonier, like Heidi Montag. She looked better before all her recent plastic surgery!

My main point is,how much of an impact is the cost of all these types of plastic surgeries, much of it unnecessary in my opinion, that these celebrities get,for the overall cost of health insurance and health care in California?

I know that California is having some serious financial difficulty in many areas, some of the worst in the nation.

San Diego checking in…

I’m a surgical technician and I’ve seen my share of plastic surgeries.

Patients have to pay cash for these cosmetic procedures, unless it is to correct a surgical or accident/injury defect.

A lot of it is middle age women who come into some money when their parents die or something. Can’t believe they are willing to blow 5 to 10 grand for a nip and tuck. Many of them are dreadfully fat and ugly. Makes me want to tell them “this ain’t gonna’ help you much hun”.

Medicine is big business and there is all kinds of surgery centers competing for this business.

Plastic surgery is an art form, and many docs are doing it that should not be… A lot of the work I’ve seen is a “re-do” of a job that turned out wrong.

Plastic surgery patients can be a bit of a head job too! It’s like they get addicted to it and keep coming back for more, even when the doc advises against it.

The Homer Simpson Syndrome… Better… Better! BETTER! DOH!!! Then they walk around looking like circus freaks for the rest of their lives.

I’m glad I’m a guy!

Sandy asks…

How do you cure being co-dependant??

i am 30 years old and been married for 12 years…. He wants to end our marriage and I am devestated!! We have been off and on for years…I am really not happy with him ethier. But I just feel lost without him….I miss him so much and just want to make him come home….I believe I am co dependant and I have no insurance so I need some self help here…!

Sarah Fields answers:

Contact your local welfare office; they should have resources for you to call for low or no-cost counseling. Call your County Mental Health office…they might have info too Many college campuses offer it at a reduced fee as well (in San Diego for example, UCSD has a counseling office that offers 50 minute sessions for $35). Call around and see what you can come up with.
